The Standard is the Standard: An Ode to Mike Tomlin

"The Standard is the Standard" one of many Tomlinisms that Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is known for. I have a great deal of respect for this man he carries himself with a professionalism that is unmatched. I don't delve into entertainers personal lives I'm way to busy being a married father of 4 & if I was single & childless I'd still be too busy for that. Anyway in all the interviews Mike Tomlin gives he is true to form well spoken, respectful, no nonsense, and also very careful with his words. He isn't one to pull punches as a few years ago there was a rift between he & then starting tailback (recently cut by the Washington Redskins) Willie Parker. At that time Parker was not happy with the Steelers rush offense & he had some comments with those regards for the media. When those comments came back to Coach Tomlin he said "When I walk into to work everyday I see 5 Lombardi Trophies' not 5 rushing titles" YES! ZING! POW! I LOVED that! He didn't call out Parker he respectfully put him in his place by saying HIS (Parker) goals are not larger than those of the team.
One of my favorite Tomlinism's is "The Standard is the Standard". He usually uses this when referring to whenever an injured player is replaced by a back up. His belief is that no matter who is in there playing the position the expectation of quality play is still the same. I apply this to my life, if Mrs. BMW is sick "the Standard is still the Standard" and the quality of my kids life should never diminish. Coach Tomlin is a true leader of men & this "ISM" is one that we can all live by. He is not Dr Martin Luther King jr, he is NOT President Barack Obama, he is NOT a role model he is a football coach who understands his role respects where he has come from & knows exactly where he wants to go.
Tomlin puts things in great perspective football is exactly that football it’s a child's game played by men who are paid handsomely for it. A Tomlinism I will never forget is the one he gave us during his very first pregame interview. The sideline reporter said "Do you feel any pressure replacing Coach Bill Cowher". Tomlin's response? "Pressure is finding a way to feed your family this is just football". A lot of people HATE Tomlinism's if you’re a Steeler fan who frequents the various messages boards & water coolers everywhere you know one person who will admit to it. They hate the fact that he speaks the way he does they are discouraged when he says things like "gap integrity", "position flexibility" or "game day hat". Me, I embrace him for who he is as well as who is his NOT. He is not Bill Cowher or Chuck Knoll. He is not Herm Edwards or Ray Rhodes. He is Mike Tomlin Super Bowl champion as an assistant coach & head Coach a man who has players currently on his team OLDER than him (James Farrior) & I am glad he coaches my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers
